How do I prepare for a Trinity College London guitar exam in India?
Trinity Guitar & Vocal Grades _Guitar Grades and Certification
1. Find your grade and enroll through the India office
Trinity has run exams in India for over a century and works through around 100,000 candidates a year across more than 100 centres in India. Ask your guitar teacher which registered centre they enter students through — most serious guitar teachers in India already have a tie-up with one.
2. Choose classical guitar or Rock & Pop guitar
Trinity offers two separate guitar tracks, and they're prepared very differently:
Classical/Acoustic guitar — covers both classical and Acoustic guitar with repertoire lists spanning a wide range of styles, duet options up to Grade 3, and a technical work suite of scales, arpeggios, and progressive studies.
Rock & Pop guitar — song-based, contemporary repertoire, assessed via video submission if you go the digital route.
3. Know the exam structure
Whichever track, a typical grade exam includes: pieces (usually 3, picked from a syllabus list per grade), technical work (scales/arpeggios), and supporting tests such as sight reading, aural, improvisation, or musical knowledge. Get the official syllabus book for your grade (from Trinity's site or a local music store) — it tells you exactly which pieces and technical requirements apply.
4. Decide face-to-face vs digital
Trinity increasingly offers digital/video exams: you record your performance at a time and place of your choice and submit it via their online platform, with the same rigour and certification as face-to-face exams. In India, most candidates still go through a registered physical Centre, but ask your teacher if a digital option is available — it can be more flexible for scheduling.
5. Practical prep steps
Work with a teacher familiar with the Trinity syllabus (not just general guitar teaching).
Buy or access the official syllabus book and any recommended technical-work books for your grade.
Practice sight-reading and aural/improvisation regularly, not just your 3 pieces — these supporting tests carry real marks and are often neglected.
If going digital, do a few practice recordings in your actual exam setup (room, instrument, phone/camera placement) well before the deadline.
Confirm the current fee and entry deadline directly with your centre — fees and exact dates change periodically.
